October 2006 SNMIC and area hospitals work together to recruit nurses and healthcare professionals Las Vegas Nursing Directory launched in Sept. The Southern Nevada Medical Industry Coalition’s (SNMIC) Recruitment Task Force successfully completed its Las Vegas Nursing Directory project. The directory – a 25-page, full-color informational piece – is already being used by hospitals and SNMIC as a recruiting tool for nurses and healthcare professionals to area hospitals. Hospitals featured in the directory include: Centennial Hills Hospital, Desert Springs Hospital, Fremont Medical Centers, Montevista Hospital, Mountain View Hospital, Nevada State Veterans Home, North Vista Hospital, Sierra Health Services, Spring Valley Hospital, St. Rose Dominican Hospitals, Summerlin Hospital, Sunrise Children’s Hospital, University Medical Center and Valley Hospital. The piece also provides lifestyle, cost of living comparisons, education, licensure and trailing spouses program information. "It's been a collaborative effort by hospitals and SNMIC to create the directory, which will help save recruitment costs for all and provide a resourceful piece to prospective nursing and healthcare professionals," said Doug Geinzer of Recruiting Nevada, who also co-chairs SNMIC's Recruitment Task Force. Geinzer said the task force intends on publishing the piece annually. Currently over 5,000 directories have been printed. For a copy of the Las Vegas Nursing Directory, click here or visit SNMIC.com. MERIN's success depends on anatomical donations The Medical Education & Research Institute of Nevada (MERIN), a not-for-profit organization, works toward the ultimate goal of improved patient care. The organization’s state-of-the-art facility in Southern Nevada serves as a venue for surgeons from around the world to learn new surgical procedures, and as a conduit through which medical device companies may develop and test new surgical instruments and techniques. Through its cooperative efforts with the medical community's public and private sectors, and through its public education programs such as Generations: An Anatomical Donation Program, MERIN is a leader in bringing to realization advances that may ultimately improve health care delivery; less invasive operations, improve surgical outcomes; shorter patient recovery time as well as reduce post-surgical infection. The public's understanding and acceptance of whole body donation is an essential step in the ongoing educational process of physicians. It is through the generosity of individuals who donate their bodies to science for medical education that in depth study of the human body can be conducted by members of the medical community. Because of whole body donation, countless individuals enjoy a better quality of life. In creating the Generations program, it has become clear that even people who whole heartedly accept and promote organ donation, have limited knowledge of or a comfort level with whole body donation. Therefore, MERIN is working to educate Southern Nevadans, in all walks of life, about the importance of whole body donation. The donation of one body to medical science can improve the lives of thousands of individuals. Whole body donation plays a vital role in helping to improve the quality of medical professionals; train medical students; keep practicing surgeons up-to-date on new medical advancements and even help to teach first responders life saving techniques. In Southern Nevada, anatomical donations can be made to MERIN. It is the only facility in the state to be specifically designated as a location for practicing surgeons to receive continuing education and hands- on training in the latest surgical techniques and the testing of innovative equipment. Since its opening in 2005, MERIN has been nationally and internationally recognized within the medical community as one of the most technologically sophisticated medical facilities of its kind. Providing physicians with a surgical environment almost identical to actual surgery suites, the 18,000- square-foot MERIN facility features a 50-seat surgical amphitheatre with nine surgical suites. Four mounted plasma screens allow for precise viewing of procedures from anywhere in the theater. MERIN’s 95- seat lecture hall has the latest in technological communication advances enabling presentations to be broadcast in real time. Private conference rooms are equipped to provide real-time viewing of lecture hall or amphitheatre activities. And, because of MERIN, local physicians have access to a nationally recognized training facility in order become more proficient with current or new surgical procedures that are being performed throughout the city’s health care centers. Additionally, the valley’s first responders are using MERIN as their training source. Whether Nevadans give the gift of themselves to MERIN or UNR School of Medicine in Northern Nevada, the education of Nevadans on the importance of whole body donation is a topic worth sharing.
